October Dinner Meeting-- Hurricane Protection for Windows and Doors
Thursday, October 02, 2008
5:30PM - 8:30PM
Thank you to the October meeting Sponsor, Pella Windows and Doors
Our sponsor, Pella Windows and Doors, presents us with a fantastic opportunity for Networking and Learning. The evening's topic will address the subject of hurricane protection for windows and doors. The guest speaker is David M. Murtough, Architectural Representative with Pella Windows and Doors.
Learning Objectives:
- · Understand the code requirements for window resistance to high wind loads.
- · Determine the best methods for protecting windows from wind-borne debris.
- · Assess the advantages and disadvantages of different design options.
Since the early 1990’s, building codes across the country have become increasingly more stringent in regard to windloads and protection from Hurricanes. The Cape and Islands have been spared in recent years from a Categorized Hurricane, however building codes have just been adopted that will make a significant impact on your next project. So far this year, there have been three named storms, making 2008 more important than ever to learn about the changing construction environment.
Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket have some of the most severe weather in all of New England and building codes now require that windows resist damage from wind-borne debris during a Hurricane. To further complicate this, The Cape’s shifting sands continue to rearrange the natural landscape and subject areas to wind damage that previously were protected, making not only the beachfront vulnerable, but areas near inland coastal ponds at risk.
In this program, Architects, Remodeling professionals, and Contractors will learn the what, why, where, and how about hurricane protection for windows. * What do building owners want? * Why is protection needed? * Where is it needed? * What do the building codes require? * How can Architects design for hurricane protection? * What product options and installation systems are available? What should the specifications say?
These questions and more will be covered during this seminar. This is of particular importance this year as local building codes have changed, which we will be addressing. Other areas in Southeast New England have already undergone this change. Learn from their experiences and make your remodel customers confident in your knowledge.
